Toxic River

A Leadership Development Game

Welcome back, camp organizers and educators! As you prepare for your next leadership camp, it’s essential to recognize the profound impact these experiences can have on your students.
Leadership camps offer a unique opportunity for students to develop crucial life skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and resilience.
Through carefully crafted activities, we can nurture the leaders of tomorrow in a fun and engaging way.

One of the keys to a successful leadership camp is incorporating clever and thought-provoking leadership development games that challenge students to think critically and work collaboratively. These activities are not just about fun; they are powerful tools that can transform a group of individuals into a cohesive team, capable of achieving great things together.

Today, we’re diving into the first of our leadership development games – the illustrious Toxic River (don’t worry it’s not a real toxic river, or a real river). This activity is designed to engage your campers in a fun yet profoundly educational experience. Let’s break it down so you’re fully prepared to guide them through this challenge.

Contents

You Will Need

  • 1 pair of gumboots (a.k.a. wellies, rain boots, or those things your grandma wears in the garden)
  • 2 lengths of rope or danger tape, each at least 2 meters long

The Set-up

  1. Lay the two ropes parallel to each other, about 3 meters apart. These will serve as your riverbanks.
  2. Place the gumboots on one side of the river. This will be your starting point.
  3. The space between the ropes is designated as the toxic river. Encourage your campers to use their imagination – perhaps it’s filled with piranhas, lava, or just really bad coffee.

The Story

Here’s the scenario you’ll present to your campers:

Your team needs to cross the toxic river safely. You have only one pair of boots to aid in your journey, and there are three critical rules to follow:
  • Each person can only wear the boots once, moving in one direction.
  • The boots cannot be thrown over.
  • If anyone touches the river with anything other than the boots, the whole team must start again.

The Debrief

After the activity, gather your campers and facilitate a debrief session. Here are some key points to discuss:

  1. Listening to Others: Reflect on whether team members listened to each other’s ideas and incorporated different suggestions. Discuss the importance of effective communication and active listening in leadership.

  2. When to Try Something New vs. When to Identify and Fix Problems: Encourage the campers to evaluate their approach. Did they stick with one method, or did they reassess and try new strategies? Highlight the importance of flexibility and problem-solving in leadership.

  3. Using Team Members’ Strengths: Discuss how the team utilized each member’s strengths. Who emerged as a leader? Who offered support? Emphasize the value of recognizing and leveraging individual strengths within a team.
